Rogue Presidency

Tristero is just on fire today:

The truth is that there is a rogue presidency and there has been, since January, 2001 (earlier, if you count the stolen election). Certainly, everyone in Washington knows it, but no one dares to admit it. The bill legalizing torture merely enables Congress to pretend they still have some influence over an executive that from day one was governing, not as if they had a mandate, but as if Bush was a dictator. If, for some miracle, the bill didn't pass, every congress-critter knows Bush would keep on torturing.

Better to vote to pass and preserve the appearance of a working American government, the thinking goes. For the very thought that the US government is seriously broken - that the Executive is beyond the control of anyone and everyone in the world - is such a truly awesome and terrifying thought that it can never be publicly acknowledged. If ever it is, if the American crisis gets outed and Congress and the Supremes openly assert that the Executive has run completely amok and is beyond control, the world consequences are staggering. It is the stuff of doomsday novels.

Damn , we wish we’d said that. It’s well-worth reading twice, in case you really believed this Congress had one ounce of courage, patriotism, honesty or even human decency about it. It’s as black and corrupt and George Bu$h’s soul.

And take this to heart. Do you really believe that a man who has so destroyed the very fabric of American democracy is going to willingly step down in January, 2009?

Lurch, it's a sad sad day. I might have to start thinking about a purchase of a total legal firearm.

Oh, belated congrats on your anniversary!

With that, I bid you adieu for 2 weeks. I doubt seriously I'll check in while away, except maybe to see how the NJ Devils are doing as hockey starts up. :-) Actually, I hope to avoid as much US news as possible. If you get a chance, see if you can convince Mr Bush and Mr B-LIAR to hold off on their Iran war until I get back.

I'm sure the war and the non-stop lying will still be going on when you return. Have a good time, take pictures, be safe.

Lurch, Bush (the Stooge) will go back to Texas in Jan 09. Rove/Cheney/Rumsfeld will, however, anoint a successor who will enjoy the benefits of the best election money can buy. And millions will be spent on a Presidential Library for an individual who doesn't read - who says irony is dead?

I'd like to believe you, Mike, but the truth is this guy likes being dictator waaaay too much, his co-conspirators find he's a very useful front man, and the Fascist Party is quite happy with what they term his "leadership."

Maier - keep the maybe-not-so-legal firearm. You might need a 'throwdown'. I'm just sayin'...

Bush'll step down off the throne or get thrown down the steps, mox nix.

Just a thought on Shrub and his crew.
What could the terrorists do to us at this point that this administration and the Republicans have'nt done to us already? Their only platform in front of Americans this November is "who is going to keep you safe from terrorism"? If only people will look at the record they have accumulated so far, the answer is right there, NOT THEM.

Well, Flash, you're right, of course. They have no new ideas, just the classic Republican campaign plan: steal, lie, and kill off as much of the New Deal legislation as possible, because they believe the best society contains two elements: thr elite and the peasantry.

I've always said, but never voiced here, the thought that if George Bu$h was really serious about getting bin Laden he'd look him up on his rolodex. Now, I admit that's snark, sarcasm, but all good sarcasm is built on a foundation of truth.

These two men have a self-serving symbiotic relationship that goes back close to 30 years - almost as long as the Bu$h and bin Laden families have been in business together.
