In news just being announced at this moment (1250 PM, Eastern) Secretary Rumsfeld is going to step down as Secretary of Defense.
There's much that could be said about this, but the real point is that George W Bu$h has decided to toss Mr Rumsfeld under the bus. Now the way is clear to accept Senator Lieberman as the new Secretary of Defense. There will be no substantive changes in Defense policy, other than a still tighter relationship with Israel, and an increased sense of Defense going after media (and bloggers) that are negative about our government policies.
By moving the Independent, Democrat (wink, wink) from Connecticut to DoD, Mr Bu$h will enable a still barely Republican Senate, since the Republican CT goveror will of course nominate a declared Republican to replace Lieberman. This will provide another layer of protection for Messers Bu$h, Cheney and Rumsfeld (et al) in case courts declare the "get out of jail free" card of the recent Military Commissions Act to be unconstitutional. A Republican Senate will be able to stall off the possible Democratic House impeachment, should it ever come to be.
UPDATE: 1:10 PM. Umm, nope. Things change quickly in a government being turned on its ear. Apparently Whining Joe is staying right where he is. Robert Gates to be the new SecDef.

Don, you are doing a heckuva job. Now, let's see about getting you the Congressional Medal of Freedom, eh?
Lurch, the only thing missing now, at least here in the Commonwealth of Voojinya, is for G. Felix Allen to concede to Jim Webb. And I hope the newly Dem House of Reps investigates the hell out of Bu$hCo. Mike
Thanks for the comment, Mike. It kinda sorta looks like there's going to be a long, nasty, expensive recount.
And, WK, of course he's going to get that medal. Just another example of failing upwards in Bu$hCo.
