Live Muzzled or Die

Newt Gingrich has been on the talking circuit. He’s been out and about, warning everybody about the dangers of Muslims, Liberals, Democrats, and the Bill of Rights, not necessarily in that order.

He spoke in Manchester, NH on Friday night, at a cozy little dinner for wealthy Republicans, during which he laid out some of the ideas he plans to incorporate into his Presidential campaign. (We covered his last public speaking engagement in New Hampshire here.) The Manchester Union Leader, one of the most right-wing papers around, has all the details of this speech, via RAWStory.com:

MANCHESTER – Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich last night defended his call to limit freedom of speech to combat terrorism, comments that last month provoked strident criticism from liberal groups.

Gingrich said the threat of biological or nuclear attack requires America to consider curbs to speech to fight terrorists, if it is to protect the society that makes the First Amendment possible.

"Our friends at the 'ACLU left,' of course, were staggered at this concept," Gingrich told an audience of Republicans at a Christmas banquet. "How could we talk about anything less than 100 percent free speech? How could we consider in any way thinking about this issue?"

Let’s see whether I understand you correctly, Mr Gingrich. You’re stating that if I am allowed to freely express my opinions about your slavering lust to dismantle the Bill of Rights, there will be a nuclear event in some US city? Are you certain about this? Should I be asking Americans how they feel about this idea of yours? A cynical man would think you‘re saying “Give me the power to shut you up or an American city will die.” It actually sounds a lot like when Nino and Ant'ny stop by a local business and ask to provide protection to a business owner. "It would be a shame if anything happened to a nice place like yours."

Mr Gingrich also discussed the now notorious story of the six Muslim imams who were arrested and ejected from an airplane last week, and subsequently banned for life from flying on Northwest Airlines. He thinks this is a pretty good idea.

Gingrich cited last month's ejection of six Muslim scholars from a plane in Minneapolis for suspicious behavior, which included reports they prayed before the flight and had sat in the same seats as the Sept. 11 hijackers.

"Those six people should have been arrested and prosecuted for pretending to be terrorists," Gingrich said. "And the crew of the U.S. airplane should have been invited to the White House and congratulated for being correct in the protection of citizens."

If flying while Muslim is going to be a crime in Mr Gingrich’s America, can we expect driving while black to be permitted? Or how about drinking while Irish? Can we expect Hasidim to be locked up, or will merely sewing stars on the clothing be enough to reassure people that they aren’t Muslims, and therefore automatically terrorists?
