DK from A Silent Cacophony made a comment to another post that I wanted to promote, because I think it should be brought to the attention of all 25 of my readers:

In light of the very sad news of the death of 27-year old 1LT Andrew Bacevich Jr, this week in Iraq, I reviewed some of his father's recent writing, which I find captivating and so common-sensical.

As you know, he wrote an incisive book on the "New American Militarism" almost two years ago. Since I served with him in Germany years ago, when his now dead son would have been 1, I've been re-reading his work. I came across this interview for a program produced by scholars at UC Berkeley. It's nearly an hour long, but for many who want to hear a nice, concise history of our military trajectory, especially since Vietnam, from a former Army colonel and now respected scholar, and decidedly not "partisan" in his approach, please take the time to watch this. It deals with the draft, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush,...

It replaced my routine of "Law and Order", and was worth every minute. He's a voice of reason, and now, a father who has just lost a precious son in a war he opposes. A bit off topic, but I believe your readership, intelligent as it obviously is, would be interested in hearing this interview.
