Yesterday was yet another terrible day in the history of Iraq’s debacle.
BAGHDAD, May 7 — Two car bombs exploded near a police checkpoint just north of Ramadi today, killing 25, including six police officers, and wounding 51 others, according to Col. Iaria Yusuf, the Iraqi security supervisor in the Anbar province. The second car bomb exploded after the police and ambulance crews had rushed to the scene of the first.
Police officials said Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia was the group responsible for the attacks, according to Reuters.
The bombings today followed a series of particularly deadly attacks across Iraq on Sunday that took the lives of more than 50 Iraqis. The American military said that eight soldiers and a journalist were killed, and 25 bodies were found across Baghdad.
Six of the soldiers and the journalist who died on Sunday were killed when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb in Diyala Province, which has become one of the most deadly places in Iraq for American troops. The military did not release the journalist’s name. The other two soldiers died in the Baghdad area from wounds from roadside bombs.
I’m in a terrible blue funk this morning. A friend of mine was wounded last week, fortunately not too seriously. I just got the email from his wife a few minutes ago. I'm glad he's all right. Don’t criticize me for needing some relief, because it's been a bad day capping off a bad week.
Let’s commemorate yesterday‘s carnage in a song.
“How long must we sing this song?”
